Hydrofoils; Flying on the Water
Reviewed by Charles K Chiodi

#398, 46 minutes............$29.95

"Those who go down to the sea are dreamers and they dream of faster ships. Up to the 20th Century nothing had changed much because of limitations of power and materials.
Early in the 20th Century, in 1919, something magical happened: Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, built a boat that went twice as fast as anything else on the water and at one point reached 70 mph. He called it a Hydrodome, which was the forerunner of boats we call now hydrofoils."
The video introduces the well-known WindRider Rave, the French Hydroptère, hydrofoil passenger ships, ferries, and military craft. Well-executed graphics show how the hydrofoils work, and New England Multihull Association Commodore, Ira Heller, a foiler himself, explains it in layman's language so everyone can understand it.
Dr. Sam Bradfield of Melbourne, Florida is the granddaddy of modern hydrofoil sailing. He has been working on perfecting it since the early 1970s when he was teaching at Stonybrook University in New York. I met him there when his experimental craft, nf2 (neither foul nor fish) was taking shape. Today, at age 85 he is still at it, having just launched his 37' ocean-racing boat, SCAT (Sam's Crazy-Ass Trimaran). The boat was built entirely of carbon fiber. The foils were laid up by Ken Swarner of Matrix Composites in Melbourne, FL, who explains how to work with carbon fiber. The rest of the boat was built by Walter Schultenberger of Multihull Technologies. The boat will be entered in the 2004 Transatlantic Race by Phil Steggall.
In Midland, Ontario some students at the University are working on a human-powered hydrofoil, using the latest technology of bicycle designs. Professor Jake Free explains how the lifting action of foils work. MIT engineers in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and others halfway around the world in Japan, are demonstrating human-powered hydrofoils and how they perform. MIT holds the world record for both men and women in this category. One solar-powered hydrofoil achieved 40 kph.
Today 80% of high-speed hydrofoil passenger ships were built in Russia after WWII. Many operate on the Great Lakes, taking tourists from Toronto to Niagara Falls.
This video is a "must see" for all multihullers who are looking ahead for the next plateau of fast sailing.

Firebird

#221 NTSC, 60 minutes...................$14.95

A mostly visual presentation of Orion, the first Firebird, in action. It starts out showing some exciting shots of Orion taken during the the 1997 Around the Island Race, starting from The Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes.
It then goes on to show how easy it is to right after a possible capsize... Just release the upper shroud and pull the lower, it's that easy.
Then on to the Modular Mouldings factory in Gweek, Cornwall, where you meet Toby Richardson the builder of the Firebird. He states that it's very easy to make a boat heavy, and difficult to keep the boat light. The main beam weighs only 58 lbs while the rear beam weighs a mere 42 lbs, resulting in an overall lightweight boat of 650 kilos (1,433 lbs).
After the factory you also get to hear about the background concept of the Firebird from its designer Martin Smith.
The video finishes up with the full length coverage of the Around the Island Race by The World of Sailing. Orion comes out on top, beating its larger multihull competitors, Shockwave and Spirit of England, to name a few; but the big victory was beating Longobarda, an 84-foot maxi-monohull, which was being sailed by HOYA (the race's sponsor).
